Parenting with the Brain in Mind

A workshop offered by Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D.

We all want our children to be independent, successful, and happy.  And we want our kids to be mentally and emotionally healthy.  But what does that mean?  And how do we go about helping our kids become all of these things that we hope for?  The goal of this workshop is to explore how to nurture our children’s developing minds and intentionally promote their mental health.

Using the cutting-edge, scientifically grounded field of Interpersonal Neurobiology as the context, this workshop will give parents access to information that will allow them to parent with their child’s brain in mind.  It will offer them practical, everyday tools to promote mental health in their children, and it will emphasize the importance of helping kids integrate the different parts of themselves—their brain, their body, their mind, their spirit, etc.—into one well-functioning whole.  Put simply, then, this workshop will aim to help us all understand ourselves and our children better so that we can help them thrive in their relationships with themselves, their family, their friends, and their world.

We’ll begin by introducing parents to the idea of integration within the mind, and integration between people.  Then each week, we’ll focus on a different form of integration, giving parents practical tools that will help them begin to immediately facilitate that type of integration within their children.

Every week will be full of discussion, and we’ll focus on practical ways this new knowledge can help us answer the parenting questions that are important to us all:  Why does she act this way?  How can I help him handle himself better?  What can I do when my kid is so upset?  How can I help them grow up to be mentally and emotionally healthy?

Our ultimate goal in this workshop will be that as parents, we’ll be better able to keep our children’s brains in mind as we parent; to understand that an integrated brain gives rise to a healthy self; and to facilitate that integration in everyday moments.  By using everyday situations to think about our children’s brains and minds, we can nurture them toward being all that they can be.
